Dear Carlos, 

how is everything going? How are you?

Finally, we managed today to place your work from before the pandemic in the outside on campus behind our department. Unfortunately, the work was in plastic bags till today somehow stored at the department. And, more unfortunately, the original location where you wanted to place it, we couldn’t manage to get, or place without loosing the work.

Now, here are some images. The reconstruction might not match as much as we wished it toooo,

Hoje foi um dia particularmente emotivo. Passam 5 anos sobre a partida de alguém especial, que muito contribuiu para eu ser como sou, existindo. Falo de Gracinda de Sousa, médica e artista, colega e amiga de Mário Botas na faculdade de medicina. Há uma obra dela, de que gosto muito, em exposição na mostra “Cruzar fronteiras” patente no ISPA até 25 de Agosto – e inclui mais de 300 obras provenientes da coleção Lusofonias, que temos vindo a constituir desde 1998.
E foi emotivo ainda porque recebi justamente hoje um e-mail de Andreas Treske, artista-amigo-de-longa-data e coordenador do departamento de arte e design na universidade de Bilkent em Ankara, a dar-me conta que a obra que ali realizei, em finais de 2019, para a exposição “a timeline for the future – stories of tenderness, love and sorrow”, tinha sido finalmente instalada num espaço ao ar livre, como era meu desejo. Trata-se da obra que encerrava essa exposição individual, que apresentei na galeria Fada, no campus universitário de Bilkent, e é sobre a perda e a restituição dos elementos naturais à sua natureza própria. Era sobre essa perda, da Gracinda, que tinha morrido há pouco tempo abrindo-me uma cratera no peito que, longe de calcificar, perdura em mim.
Fico feliz por saber que a obra foi instalada ali e que terei finalmente um sítio onde me reencontrar com a memória. Obrigado Andreas. Ficou linda. Uma graça-linda, homenageando-a neste dia. Obrigado. Obrigado. Obrigado.

Today was a particularly emotional day. 5 years pass after the departure of someone special, who contributed a lot to me being who I am, existing. I’m talking about Gracinda de Sousa, doctor and artist, colleague and friend of Mário Botas in medical school. There is one of her works, which I really like, on display in the “Crossing Borders” exhibition at ISPA until August 25th – and it includes more than 300 works from the Lusofonias collection, which we have been putting together since 1998.
And it was even more emotional because today I received an e-mail from Andreas Treske, long-time artist-friend and coordinator of the art and design department at Bilkent University in Ankara, informing me that the work there at the end of 2019, for the exhibition “a timeline for the future – stories of tenderness, love and sorrow”, it had finally been installed in an outdoor space, as was my wish. It is the work that ended this solo exhibition, which I presented at the Fada gallery, on the Bilkent university campus, and it is about the loss and restoration of natural elements to their proper nature. It was about that loss, of Gracinda, who had died not long ago, opening a crater in my chest that, far from calcifying, remains in me.
I am happy to know that the work was installed there and that I will finally have a place where I can reconnect with my memory. Thank you Andreas. Looks great. A grace-beautiful, honoring her on this day. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.

Bugün özellikle duygusal bir gündü. Ben olmama, var olmama çok şey katan özel birinin ayrılışının üzerinden 5 yıl geçti. Doktor ve sanatçı, meslektaşı ve Mário Botas’ın tıp fakültesindeki arkadaşı Gracinda de Sousa’dan bahsediyorum. ISPA’da 25 Ağustos’a kadar devam eden “Crossing Borders” sergisinde çok beğendiğim bir işi var ve 1998’den beri bir araya getirdiğimiz Lusofonias koleksiyonundan 300’den fazla eseri içeriyor.
Ve daha da duygusaldı çünkü bugün uzun süredir sanatçı arkadaşım olan ve Ankara Bilkent Üniversitesi sanat ve tasarım bölümü koordinatörü Andreas Treske’den bana 2019’un sonunda oradaki çalışmaların bittiğini bildiren bir e-posta aldım. “Gelecek için bir zaman çizelgesi – şefkat, aşk ve keder hikayeleri” sergisi için, sonunda benim dileğim gibi bir dış mekana yerleştirildi. Bilkent üniversitesi yerleşkesindeki Fada galerisinde sunduğum bu kişisel sergimi sonlandıran, doğal unsurların kaybolması ve doğal haline döndürülmesi üzerine olan yapıttır. Kısa bir süre önce göğsümde bir krater açarak ölen ve kireçlenmek şöyle dursun içimde kalan Gracinda’nın kaybıyla ilgiliydi.
İşin oraya kurulduğunu ve sonunda hafızamla yeniden bağlantı kurabileceğim bir yere sahip olacağımı bilmek beni mutlu ediyor. Andreas’a teşekkür ederim. Harika görünüyor. Bu gün onu onurlandıran zarif-güzel. Teşekkürler. Teşekkürler. Teşekkürler.
